Out Back by the Pool: A Custom Radius Fence

Fences are required for all in-ground pools in Michigan, as an important safety measure to protect children and others who are at risk of falling in. Not only is this a state requirement, but most homeowners insurance make it obligatory as well – read more about the specific requirements of pool fencing here.

Just because this fencing is required for lawful compliance doesn’t mean it has to be rudimentary and unattractive. Recently, Out Back Casual Living & Fence completed a beautiful custom fencing project for a Grand Rapids client who had a unique request: radius fencing, or curved fencing.

A Unique Challenge to Add A Touch of Elegance

The client’s landscaping company reached out to Out Back Fence for support with the required pool barrier. Coincidentally, the client was also a longtime customer of Out Back, which facilitated cooperation throughout the process of landscape and pool planning. The client requested a radius-style fence to add a unique and personal touch to the pool area. The landscaper wasn’t sure it was possible.

With over 30 years of experience in custom fencing projects, Out Back knew exactly how to turn this client’s dreams into reality. While it certainly made the project more complex, these unique touches are what really elevate a space and make it feel like home.

Out Back Uses A Two-Phase Approach

In order to complete the fence, Out Back took a two-phase approach to fence installation. Following the blueprints, the team completed the straight runs in the first phase, leaving gaps for the radiused or curved sections of fence.

Using absolutely precise measurements, the team sent the requirements to the manufacturer for fully-custom radius fencing. During the second phase of the project, with these custom bends integrated into the fencing, Out Back was able to unite the straight and radius sections for a cohesive, gorgeous pool fence.

Uneven Ground Adds an Extra Challenge

One aspect that added difficulty and complexity to the entire project was the elevation changes within the yard. Uneven ground is very common for fencing projects, but two of the radiused areas required small elevation changes. This is one of the reason precise measurements are so critical to custom fencing projects like this one.

With the proper prepwork and planning, the Out Back team handled these complicated elevation changes without breaking a sweat.

A Complementary Fence Style

Many homeowners choose black aluminum fencing for their in-ground pools, because it is typically more subtle and aids visibility. However, for this particular client, a white ornamental aluminum pool fence complemented the trim of the house. It also worked very well with the layout of the backyard patio and pool, tying the landscape together rather than impeding visibility.

The client was very pleased with the color choice.
